--- By Wiseman (Migual Perez) --- Beta One --- Theories and ideas about Sonic 1 Bonus Stages ============================================= (Please excuse my English, I'm from Spain) 1. The 1UP item: Sonic Team never put an 1UP item easy to get. So if 1UP items were in bonus stages, that means they were really big and labyrinthic. The weird thing is the other special items are only blocks now, it function was disabled, but the 1UP item still works, and it's described in the game manual (but not present in the bonus stages). I think Sonic Team made wonderful bonus stages, but decided to cut them because they were too big or too hard, and then they redesigned the bonus concept, disabling the W and xACT items, but not the 1UP item. Then the manual guys wrote the manual, including the description for the 1UP item. Remember Sonic 2 manual was also made with some Sonic 2 gamma screenshots. Some days before the final release, Sonic Team removed the 1UP "quicky" without disabling its function, in order to make the game harder. 2. The "W" item: If the "R" item is for "Rotation (change)", go find a word beginning with W to describe its function. It should be a miscelaneous function like the "R". 3. The xACT items: Have you noticed 1ACT is grey and the other two are blue? This might mean one thing: bonus stages were only accessable from within Act 1. Picking the 1ACT item the user will be sended back to Act 1 after getting the emerald (so 1ACT is grey); picking the other items the user will jump to those acts (so they're are different coloured). And what for the Goals? Maybe they wasn't in the version the xACT items worked. Maybe Goals replaced xACT items later. 4. The junk appearing when you go out of the bonus stage with debug and press left. I think it's part of the game variables, etc. because sometimes you'll see they change without touching them. The thing is simple: the game doesn't check stage bound in bonus stages because they are closed areas. If you go very far away, other data in memory responding to these coordinates is used. Because it's almost random for the bonus stage, weird unused items are shown. 5. If you use debug you will be allowed to print rings, and some weird glitchy things. The first thing is a box, and when you print it and move, it appears to be in a different parallax plane, nearer to the user (it moves faster when you move). Even weirder are the other things you can print. They move like flickies, and bounce in the box. --- Taken from 'Secrets of Sonic the Hedgehog - The Original' http://secretsonic.cjb.net ---
