January 2001 News

(1-30-2001)
  • Several rumors have made news on places such as IGN about Sega and things they are doing with their development team and the Dreamcast system. Firstly, I'd like to say that no they are not giving up on the Dreamcast. A company doesn't make a bunch of future plans and then just give up. That's the worst and stupidest mistake any company could possibly make! They aren't making games for PS2 either. They are competing against Sony as they have proved by selling their DC chips to 'non-Sony' supporters. As for Game Boy Advanced, it may not be made from Nintendo, but it's licensed BY Nintendo, so this would be a stupid marketing mistake for Sega as well. I would just like to clarify all of this confusion. Companies like IGN have made LOT'S of mistakes. They are not like BIG magazine companies or anything that can 'directly' get the information 'directly' from the companies. I am certainly not putting down IGN as they have been a highly successful company for several years. I often visit their sites myself. However, what 'seems' like a big organization and what truly 'is', those factors are completely different. I know this from my dad being in business. He has recently been involved with his own internet business. Though, I am not saying anything about it as I have specifically been asked, I will say that it's the same deal. A company tries to look bigger than what they are and that is a key goal in marketing. Certainly I am for that, but I am suggesting to watch out for that as you can get too many false rumors. I know these things about Sega because I know a huge deal about marketing myself.

It was stated on MTV News from an official report from Sega that they are NOT killing the DC! They stated that it was just a rumor. So, I am not telling you to stop going to IGN as that isn't very fair, but what I am saying however is that when they say something like that, it's NOT ever true!

So, without sounding too preachy, I would just like to say that Sega is continuing to do what they have been doing since DC first launched.

  • Brett Kosinski is working extremely hard on his Sonic 2 binary level editor. However, he's never actually done anything with it, so he desided to throw the Sonic community a little treat. Now available is a version of HPZ for Sonic 2 FINAL! The only problem is some sprites and floors, but he's still working on fixing this stuff. Anyhow, you can download it here!

  • Many people are getting into the habbit of looking for Sonic Team members and asking them questions about the games. However, I must warn that this is a great thing, but can be taken too far. As Sonysbad told me, large questionaires can easily scare them away. This is because beings there are about 100 questions for them to answer, that's a LOT. They'd have to take their time to answer all of them. Heck, I personally wouldn't answer that many questions. Plus, Sonic 2 was made about 8 years ago, so that's stressing their minds just a tad bit. I'm sure they will remember a lot, but it's hard sometimes. Obviously, they're older, so their minds are fresher than young kids and teenagers. However, I see a major problem here. So, I'd like to start something that will fix this. If a Sonic Team member is found, get the questionaire ready, and e-mail it to me at saxman@shentel.net. Then I will fix the questions to the most logical questions and shorten it WAY down, as well as including any important questions I might have if it's ok with the person who has the questionaire. Beings I know some of the answers to things, I can get rid of those that aren't needed. Though, any in which I know there is a slight posibility that I'm wrong on, I will keep. I think this is a safe way to ensure that we get what we want without overdoing it.

Sonic 2 WAV Importer - change the "SEGA" sound to something more useful, like "SONIC 2".

    HUGE code optimizations!

  • Quinntesson, the creator of the Genesis emulator "AGES", is considering to add support for SAX patches! It won't happen by next release, but perhaps after he makes the new release public, he will add support. Beings the format is extremely complex, it takes a lot of time for any programmer to make software to work with it. However, Quinntesson has always been a hard worker, so we can hope for the best. Then once (and if) the support is in AGES, SAX patches will attempt to replace IPS patches in a way to make patching ROM's more efficient.

  • I am very close to finishing up the Visual Basic port of Rocket's Sonic ROM Hacking Station.

    Current features:
Advanced search engine to return the correct description of a hex address depending on the game and type of file.
Shortcut bar that launches DGen, Genecyst and two hex editors.
SonED launcher - It has a new routine that shortens filenames and folders.
Web links to the most popular pages of the SSRG.

We do not have a definite release date yet. However, it is 89% complete (this was done on an SRHCS-like scale), so expect it soon.

  • A new definition in the Sonic community has been defined. This definition describes someone who can hack a Sonic ROM and find information and accurately note it all. I label this as "SRT" which notes a person as a Sonic ROM Technology professional. To become an SRT professional and be able to become good at hacking Sonic ROM's, check out http://www.sonichacking.org/course/index.htm.

  • Gerbil here - I am doing major recoding for Sonic HackingWiz Pro Beta 17. The recoding for Beta 16 was just minor. Beta 17 completely redoes most of the older routines, like the Sonic 1 hacking utility. It also gets rid of some programmer-only tags that are not necessary in the compiled version, which should save some space.

Also, some people are having problems installing HackWiz - in order to install, you must use a utility like WinZip to extract the install program (get it at www.winzip.com) to unzip it. Once the MSI file is unzipped, you have to have Windows Installer 1.1 or later. Windows Installer 1.1 can be downloaded at my site, Gerbil's Sonic ROM Hacking Utilities. When Windows Installer is installed, run the MSI file. It should work. If it doesn't, post a message on my messageboard.

  • Haven't posted here in a while.. I thought I'd tell everyone that a new version of SonED is out today. It was supposed to have been released on the first of the month, but the new file got misplaced and the only one you could get was the older version.. I've fixed that just now though, so you'll be able to take advantage of the new features, such as the ability to load files from other directories instead of just the SonED one, and support for both versions of Sonic CD PC! Be sure to check it out!

  • Hi everyone, Andy here. Over the past two years, I have received many requests from people who were interested in joining the SSRG staff, but didn’t know how to exactly apply. Many have created web sites in hopes of getting their web sites hosted on SSRG, which in turn means they will end up on the SSRG staff list. Unfortunately, this ends up being a bad idea for most, because the content on their site ends up becoming a mirror of stuff found on SSRG, with a few things in which they have discovered.

To combat this trend, I would like to introduce a new, experimental division at SSRG, called “The Research Division”. Like a scientist using the scientific method, your job will be to uncover hidden information or to do research in your spare time as usual. Whenever you make a finding, it will be your job to present the information for review. From their, your findings will be forwarded to the appropriate section at SSRG, with full credit to your name. (I will standardize this procedure and maybe make the posting of info “public” so none-staffers can introduce findings.)

This system works best for those who don’t want to deal with the creation, maintenance and the PR of running a website, but want to contribute. I feel this model in the end will give the public a more concrete method of presenting findings.

As always, if there is a section on SSRG you feel you could run better, you are always welcome to “challenge” that person for the position. (Only do this if you are serious.)

If you interested in applying, email Andy.

  • Over the course of the next week or two, the main page will be reorganized and a few section may merge or disapear. We'll let you know of the changes when they are made.

  • Ok, I must confess, I created that Sonic 3 beta ROM by hacking. I released the hoax in attempt to see how many people would be fooled and who wouldn't. I meant no harm just to let you know. Anyhow, it's still available if you haven't tried it and you're curious about it. I must say that a good number of people were fooled (partly because so many trusted me).

  • Happy New Year! To celibrate this new year, a Sonic 3 beta (yes, this is real) has been found! Gerbil uploaded it at http://ssrg.emulationzone.org/gerbil/md16053.zip. I inspected it because I assumed it was fake, but this thing is for sure real! It's a very late beta, but it's better than no beta at all!
