February 2001 News

(2-23-2001)
  • Hi all; Goon of the CLA here. I'm here to say that the CLA will be temporarily suspended, at longest until July. The reason for this is my A-Level exams in college - for those not in the UK, you take GCSEs at 16 and A-Levels at 18. I'd just like to thank eveyone who has contributed or even visited the site, and Rocket for giving it a chance.

Just remember - I'll be back. All those things promised on the page WILL be done when I'm back! Keep posting to the board and visiting the room!

  • Sonic ROM Hacking Station Version 2.00 is now available! You can get it at http://ssrg.emulationzone.org/gerbil. SRHS is the tool you use if you find a strange address in a Sonic ROM and you don't know what it does. Note that currently, not every single address is documented. If you find an undocumented address, please send it to me so I can update SRHS.

  • A group of people are going to form a hack and MMFX game that will be a Dust Hill Zone recreation. This will be the ultimate hack of the decade (that is, if it works). Here is a screenshot of the title screen of the hack (title card hack by me):

Do you want to contribute to either the Dust Hill hack or MMFX game? If so, just goto my messageboard (Click Here) and post your contribution.

  • Want some screen shots of the special stage from Sonic 3D Blast (Saturn)? These aren't from the final game at all. In fact, the special stages shown in these screen shots are a completely different design. These screen shots have 'never' been shown to the public and so I'd like to take this opurtunity to release them. Click here to download them. The gameplay shown in these screen shots was originally supposed to be a new Sonic action-based game on the Saturn, but was repositioned to work as the special stages in Sonic 3D Blast. However, they weren't finished in time (came close to complete however) and so they weren't used.

  • Today, the SSRG is proud to announce the debut of a section that is truly one of a kind: the Sonic Level Map Archive. This archive is the first of its kind because no one else (including gaming magazines) have ever attempted to do such a feat. The layout looks ugly for now, but a redesign is in the works. I would like to thank Stealth of Organized Chaos for his enormous contributions to the section.

  • The SSRG is proud to annouce the debut of the Sonic CD Beta page. The section is being maintaining by The Taxman, whom was choosen from our list of applicants earlier in the month. Though the section is under construction, it looks very promising. How? Check it out and you'll see why!

  • Sonic 2 Splash font v0.30 is available. I added B, G, O, and the period. I will try to work on pixel-perfect accuracy once I get all the characters into the font. But for now, I need a few more still. I also increased the size so that you can use a size 12 to view the size that Sonic 2 uses. I did a few things to it which will hopefully fix any problems people had before and posibly get it working on systems that didn't like the font. Let me know of any problems you might still posibly have. Anyhow, you can download the new version here.

  • UPDATED (02-14-01)

Sonic 2 Splash font v0.20 is now available. I have added characters C, K, P, R, S, V, X, Y, and Z. This makes a total of 18 characters. Once again, you can download it here.

  • I have been working on my own font. Actually, it's only a recreation, but no matter, it's the Sonic 2 splash screen font (the one that looks nearly identical to Gaslight). I call it simply just "Sonic 2 Splash". I'm doing all the letters with "pixel-perfect" quality. The font isn't finished yet, but you can get a preview here. Currently, I have A, E, F, H, I, L, M, N, and T implented (caps on). However, there's still a lot more to be done obviously. If you select "Sonic 2 Splash" and select font size "48", then type in uppercase, you'll find that the characters match the characters from Sonic 2 with identical quality! I am hoping to make this font something that will become very popular and used frequently in the Sonic community. As of now however, there probley isn't much you can use it for at the moment. Still, it's a start!

  • We've reached #200,000 as you can see and so now I'd like to congratulate Nick Ledgard for being our lucky #200,000 visitor. Next hit will be #250,000.

  • We're getting close to #200,000 on our hit counter. So, if you're #200,000, send a snapshot of proof to saxman@shentel.net.

  • Hi everyone, Andy here. I've been swamped with job applications and hosting requests all weekend long that I've fallen behind in my school work. Therefore, I am going to have to take a short break from screening applicants until I get my academic work back on track. It should be no more then a week. In the mean time, if you sent me some email and I haven't gotten back to you, hang-on: I'll get back to you.

  • A few announcements to make.

  • Viewer feedback concerning the openings on SSRG has been a hit! I have received a dozen or so applications thus far. An updated "Want Ads" file should be online later tonight.

  • As a result of the recent job hirings, I would like to quickly welcome the new members of the SSRG staff: Taxman, Nime, Cinos2001 and Egguman. A few others are still pending.

  • Yarharhar of Sonic 2: Robotnic's Revenge has decided, after much deliberation, to can the project. His future plans are unknown at this time.

  • I will be getting a hold of Ravma479's video of Sonic 2 Beta on an episode of Nick Arcade. I'll digitize it shortly after I receive it.

In a related note, Justin Gehrts got a hold of a Sonic 2 preview tape on eBay. It's in PAL format, but I have access to PAL VHS tape players. I will post it online when I get the chance. I now have a FireWire port which should make things intersting. :)

  • Lastly, for those that listened to my Emmy speech at the 2nd annual Emmy Awards, you recall that I hinted at a few surprises this year at SSRG.

#1 was Sonichacking.org. #2 was a redesign of SSRG. (Still in progress.) #3 is a secret new section that has been in the developments for awhile now. We should have it up shortly.(A week or so.) I won't tell you what it is just yet, but I will tell you that it will be a first for any Sonic site, including SonicTeam's own site, or any magazine covering any Sonic game for that matter! What is it? Click here for a preview! As for #4...
